Tiger Recovery Program Receives Award

Princeton Public Schools is thrilled to announce that its Tiger Recovery Program has been honored with a prestigious Gold Star of Innovation Award from the Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP). This esteemed recognition acknowledges the district’s outstanding commitment to personalized instruction and academic growth, providing students with the opportunity to recover and master essential skills that they may have previously missed.

Piloted for Princeton Middle School's 8th grade, Tiger Recovery specifically supports students who have received an F in English, math, or science at the end of a trimester.  The personalized coursework is designed to equip every student with a solid foundation of success before entering high school. Using Apex Learning, a digital curriculum that is standards-aligned, engaging, and interactive, students receive personalized instruction tailored to the specific skills they need to learn, relearn or reinforce. The self-paced modules can be completed in less time than repeating an entire trimester because they focus on the learning gaps.

"We firmly believe that every student can succeed academically, and the Tiger Recovery Program is a testament to that belief," said Erin Frank, Assistant Principal at Princeton Public Schools. "By offering customized courses based on the specific skills and standards that students need to master, we ensure they have the necessary foundation to close their learning gaps and get back on track to succeed academically."

The Tiger Recovery Program provides students with dedicated class time and flexibility at school and home. As students demonstrate a clear understanding and mastery of the skills they previously failed, they seamlessly transition back to their original class schedules. The program enables students to recover academically and prepares them for the challenges they will face in high school.

Since its implementation, the Tiger Recovery Program has had a profound impact. Preliminary data indicate that students participating in Tiger Recovery show improvement, and 45% of students who failed classes in one trimester achieved passing grades the following trimester. The immediate intervention has motivated students to strive to do better in school. Tiger Recovery will expand to 7th grade next year.

"Tiger Recovery helped me to learn more and encouraged me to try harder. It really does push you to try harder." - Xavier, 8th Grade

"Tiger Recovery helped me to close the gaps on what I was struggling with. It helped me to learn the things I had not learned." - Kaylee, Grade 8

"I love going at my own pace, figuring out how to do some of the things that I missed when the teachers went over it the first time." - Grace, Grade 8

"Students are seeing value in taking notes and using them, also asking questions if they have them. They can see an end goal, and it is motivating for some of them." - Michelle C, Grade 8 Teacher

Looking ahead, Princeton Public Schools remains dedicated to the continuous improvement and expansion of the Tiger Recovery Program. The district plans to monitor and adjust the program based on ongoing data analysis, ensuring students receive the necessary support to thrive academically. By leveraging personalized strategies, Princeton Public Schools can maintain its high graduation rates and equip students with the skills and knowledge they need for success in school and beyond.
